Outpatient

Ambulance Services

The Health Services Authority operates the country’s primary 24-hour ALS designed emergency medical service staffed by a team of skilled emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Our ambulances operate from stations in Grand Cayman including the Cayman Islands Hospital, West Bay Health Centre and the North Side Health Centre. A station is also located at Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac. 

Accident & Emergency

The Accident and Emergency Unit provides 24-hour coverage for persons who need urgent medical care. It is staffed with specially trained physicians and registered nurses at all times. Other specialists such as surgeons, gynaecologist, paediatricians and radiologists are available “on call” after normal working hours if needed.

The unit has nine beds for observations; three of these beds allows for the provision of immediate attention and intensive cardiac care to persons presenting with chest-pains. Each of these beds is equipped with specialised cardiac equipment and supplies.

The unit also encompasses a room for paediatric patients, a room for infectious cases, a trauma room, a room for carrying out minor procedures and a quiet room for persons suffering emotional/mental trauma.

Public Health Services

The Health Services Authority through an Agreement with the Ministry of Health is responsible for public health programmes under the Public Health Department. Public Health services include:

  • Health advice and vaccines for international travellers;
  • Health assessment, including vision and hearing tests for children;
  • Nutrition and dietary counselling;
  • Child growth and development monitoring;
  • Health Promotion;
  • Communicable disease screening; and
  • Disease prevention and control programmes, including immunization.

Dialysis Unit

People who have malfunctioning kidneys know that the service provided by the dialysis unit is crucial. This modern purpose built facility is fully equipped to meet the specific needs of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. The unit has facilities to accommodate up to eleven (11) dialysis patients at a time. On average, the unit dialyses 33 patients per day. 

The Dialysis Unit serves local outpatients and inpatients, visitors and cruise ship passengers in transit. It is open 6 days per week, Monday to Saturday from 7:00 am to 12:00am. A dialysis nurse is on call for emergencies. To book vacation dialysis please contact the dialysis unit at 345-244-2624/2769. 

Dental Clinic

The aim of the Cayman Islands Dental Clinic is to ensure that all Caymanians and residents have the opportunity to retain a functional and healthy mouth for life by preventing what is preventable and by containing any remaining disease or deformity by efficiently and effectively distributing treatment resources. As a tourist destination, we provide emergency dental service to visitors as well as residents.

Our main clinic is located on the compound of the Cayman Islands Hospital. It can be contacted on 244-2741/2742. Its opening hours are Mon – Fri 7:30 AM -4:00 PM. For emergency dental services please visit our clinic to place your name on the waiting list.

Lions Eye Clinic

The Lions Eye Clinic offers a comprehensive range of medical and surgical ophthalmic services from a modern facility located next to the Dental Clinic on the Cayman Islands Hospital site. We perform a full range of eye care services including diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, corneal conditions, paediatric eye care, pterygium and laser procedures. General Practice

The Health Services Authority provides a range of general family health services and offers a variety of up-to-date diagnostic and treatment services in a modern and friendly environment. The clinic is staffed with physicians who are trained to deal with emergency situations, as well as minor illnesses and injuries such as the common cold.  Walk-in visits may be seen at the Urgent Care Clinic (see more below). Services include, but not limited to: 1) Diagnosis, investigation and treatment of non-life threatening illnesses. 2) Routine care of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and muscle and joint problems. 3) Routine check-ups including medicals, PAP smears. 4) Diabetic Clinic 5) Dressing changes.

Our urgent care clinic, located in at the Cayman Islands Hospital campus (entrance in the atrium) offers walk-ins and is aimed at patients with flu-like symptoms, non-emergent illnesses and injuries, including mild sprains, cuts and colds.

Behavioural Health Department (Mental Health)

The HSA Behavioural Health Department provides a variety of services for children, adolescents, and their families. These include 24-hour emergency care, outpatient therapy and testing, acute inpatient care, consultation and liaison services, community outreach and education, and research. Along with general services, current specialities at the Behavioural Health Outpatient Clinic for this age group include therapy for anxiety, trauma, and depression; assessment and acute intervention for child protection cases; forensic assessments; neuropsychology and psychiatric consultation and medication management. The clinic will be further expanding the range of emergency and outpatient services offered to minors and their families.

Alex’s Place – Our comfortable and youth-friendly centre complements the Accident & Emergency department by providing care and support to children and adolescents (ages 10 – 20) experiencing mental health issues. Services are currently offered Monday to Friday 10am – 6pm.

Laboratory Services

Our world-class serves the majority of the population of the Cayman Islands and receives specimens from Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. It is operated 24 hours, seven days a week by a highly qualified and committed team of specialists and support staff. The associated phlebotomy service at the Cayman Islands Hospital operates Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM and on Saturday at 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM.   We also offer on-site phlebotomy services at the Smith Road Medical Centre, 2nd Floor Monday – Friday 7:00am – 5pm.

The laboratory has attained and continues to maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation which further demonstrates the highest regards for quality assurance.

Forensic Science Laboratory

The Cayman Islands Forensic Science Laboratory is an established multifunctional, state-of-the-art laboratory operated by the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority in Grand Cayman. The laboratory offers expertise in a number of areas including Forensic Biology and DNA Testing, DNA Databasing Services, DNA Paternity Services, Forensic Toxicology Testing, Forensic Drug Analysis, Pathology, and Forensic Criminalistics testing in selected areas. The Laboratory provides assistance in criminal and other legal investigations through the examination of physical and biological evidence. These services include the analysis of drugs and alcohol in human body fluids such as urine or blood (Forensic Toxicology), examination of street drugs, assessment of evidence in relation to serious crimes such as sexual assaults and murders, crime scene investigation, and postmortem toxicology. The laboratory also offers its services to non-law enforcement agencies, for example with urine drug testing the laboratory offers random testing to clients from probation services and also to government agencies and private companies who wish to perform pre-employment or random drug screening on their employees. Opening hours for walk-in urine drug screening services are from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM, however, office hours are from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Morgue

The hospital morgue provides both a temporary resting place and a facility for medical investigations to determine the cause of death. It comprises a waiting/reception area, a resting chamber (with capacity for six bodies) and a twin table modern autopsy room with a glass-screened observation gallery.

Autopsy examinations (approximately 45-50 per year) are undertaken by a pathologist. HSA currently has two pathologists on staff. Autopsies are typically carried out at the request of the coroner, but they can also be requested in cases where there may be a public interest or privately by concerned families. They are performed typically on unexplained, sudden or unnatural deaths (as required by law and at the discretion of the coroner) but autopsies may still be done in other cases where there is a need to clarify the cause of death.

Nutrition Services

Our highly experienced and dedicated registered dietitians provide up to date evidence-based dietary counselling and medical nutrition therapy. Nutrition services include individualized detailed assessments and diet plans which range from weight management for adults and children to healthy eating with diabetes, high cholesterol and much more. Several clinics are offered weekly.

Nutrition clinics at the Specialist Clinic, Cayman Islands Hospital are offered on Tuesdays from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM, Thursdays from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM and the first Monday of every month there is a dedicated Paediatric nutrition clinic from 1:30 PM -4:00 PM.

Nutrition services are offered at the General Practice clinic on a weekly basis; however, these services can also be accessed at the district health centres  on a monthly and bi-monthly basis with Nutrition clinics being offered every 1st Friday at West Bay Health Centre, 3rd Tuesdays in Bodden Town and bi-monthly on 2nd Mondays in North Side and 1st Thursdays in East End, as well as Cayman Brac every 3rd Thursday. Home visits are also conducted for non-ambulatory patients upon referral.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy Services is housed in a spacious and modern facility at the Smith Road Centre (150 Smith Road). A complement of highly trained and dedicated staff provides individualised, detailed assessments and treatments in all areas of physiotherapy including neuro, orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation. On staff is a paediatric therapist specialising in neuro-developmental delays and other problems in the pediatric population. There is also an occupational therapist and speech language pathologist. 

In addition, patients are able to obtain custom splinting for hand injuries, worksite ergonomic evaluations and have access to regularly scheduled prosthetic and orthotic clinics.

The unit houses a 1000 sq foot gym, two whirlpools for burn and wound care and also a Hydrotrack unit (water-filled chamber) for aquatic therapy. HSA offers a comprehensive rehab service in a caring, nurturing environment.

Pharmacy

The HSA’s Main Pharmacy has relocated to the new Smith Road Medical Centre, 150 Smith Road, George Town.  Please note: All uncollected prescriptions and refill requests previously submitted will now be available for collection at the Smith Road Pharmacy.

The hospital pharmacy will continue to provide service for patients accessing care on-site and is located at the front entrance atrium of the Cayman Islands Hospital at 95 Hospital Road in George Town.

As the largest pharmacy in Cayman, the HSA pharmacy offers a wide selection of medications for hospital patients, government employees and prescriptions from your private physician. With pharmacy locations across Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, we can provide services close to home for all residents of Cayman.

Don’t want to drop off your refill and wait? We have a refill dropbox outside of the Cayman Islands Hospital Pharmacy as well as an online refills system, with pick-up locations on-site or at the Government Administration Building (for civil servants working at GAB). When collecting your medication, please provide photo identification along with your current health insurance card. The average wait time for prescriptions to be filled is approximately 30 – 45 minutes, although during peak times such as 10:00am – 2:00pm you may incur extended wait times.

* Drop off and online refill requests is only available for prescriptions that have refills remaining. If you require a new prescription, please contact your doctor.

Radiology

The Radiology department is a multifaceted and highly specialized digital department which strives to meet the needs of all patients and clinicians in diagnostic imaging. The department offers a wide range of services including General and specialized X-ray procedures, Ultrasounds, Computerized Tomography (CT), Interventional Radiography, and Mammography (including wire localization, Ductogram and Biopsies).

The department also provides special ultrasound services such as Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies, Echocardiograms and Vascular studies. Our CT suite specializes in services including Vascular Angiography, Colonography and Bone density studies.

The hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Saturdays 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.

Recompression Chamber

Cayman Hyperbaric Services’ team of 30 qualified and dedicated part-time operators and attendants operate Cayman’s only Recompression Chamber. Located at the Cayman Islands Hospital, the unit is readily available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on an on-call basis to treat diving emergencies and other elective medical problems. Women’s Health

Our Women’s Health Centre is devoted exclusively to serving the needs of female patients at all stages of life. The centre is staffed with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals specializing in women’s health issues.

ParentCraft Classes

ParentCraft is a complimentary course for expectant parents who may have questions about pregnancy and caring for an infant. Our experienced staff from our Maternity Ward, Physiotherapy Unit and Dietetics Department share their expertise to alleviate any concerns a new mom may have.

ParentCraft is an eight week series where a different topic is covered at each class. Miss a class? The schedule restarts after eight weeks so you can catch another one before your baby comes.

Bring a pillow and a partner or friend to support you. Reminder that facemasks are required while at a medical facility.

Classes will be take place in the Cayman Islands Hospital Hibiscus Conference Room (back entrance of the hospital) 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Click here for more information.

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapy is provided in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

The Respiratory Therapist is involved in the management of acute care patients who are admitted for a variety of respiratory conditions.  Therapy includes, but is not limited to, advanced airway care and mechanical invasive and non-invasive support using C-Pap and mechanical ventilators, optimizing pulmonary ventilation, administration of prescribed pharmaceutical substances/agents and patient and family teaching.

Treatment and support are also provided for persons with chronic conditions; such as performing sleep disorder studies, home oxygen and cpap therapy as well as pulmonary function tests.
