The Speech Language Therapist provides assessment and treatment in the areas of language, articulation, fluency, voice, hearing, swallowing, cognition augmentative/alternative communication and social aspects in both paediatric and adult populations. The post-holder will also provide and participate in patient education to encourage generalization of target skills and in public education in order to increase awareness of communication sciences and disorders in the community.

Primary Responsibilities: The post-holder will evaluate hearing and speech/language test results and medical or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, and swallowing disorders. The post-holder will monitor patients' progress and adjust treatments accordingly. Will administer hearing or speech/language evaluations, tests, or examinations to patients to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written and oral tests and special instruments. Record information on the initial evaluation, treatment, progress, and discharge of clients.

The post-holder will develop and implement treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed language, swallowing disorders, and inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems, based on own assessments and recommendations of physicians, psychologists, and social workers. The post-holder will teach clients to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles, and breathing mechanisms. The post-holder will consult with and advise medical staff on speech or hearing topics such as communication strategies and speech and language stimulation. Instruct patients and family members in strategies to cope with or avoid communication-related misunderstandings.

Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Science (BSc. in UK, Australia, or South Africa) or Master of Science (MSc. in U.S.A. or Canada) or equivalent in Speech Language Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, or Communication Sciences and Disorders. Three (3) years postgraduate experience is mandatory. Successful candidate should have completed advance training in either of the following:

  • Training support for patients with dementia and their families.
  • Training related to dysphagia assessment and intervention (VitalStim, MDTP, MBSImp etc.)
  • Advanced training in treatments relating to neuro-cognitive communication disorders including but not limited to VnEST, ORLA, SPICES, Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) etc.
