The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) Ethics Committee is holding an Ethics Discussion Seminar on April 10 from 4 to 7 pm in the Hibiscus Conference room. There is no charge for the event and refreshments will be provided. The event promises to be interactive and informative – it will provide a unique platform for members of the public to discuss ethical issues with the HSA Ethics Committee. The aim of the Ethics Committee is to provide support and advice to all healthcare providers and patients and their families if needed when faced with an ethical dilemma. Lizzette Yearwood, the HSA’s Chief Executive Officer, says the Ethics Committee is an invaluable resource available to Health Care Professionals. They host monthly meetings which provide a healthy environment for healthcare providers to consult and discuss ethical decisions in confidence. “We come across many situations where we may be faced with very tough issues with no easy solutions. Where these issues lead to ethical dilemmas, it may be helpful to talk things through with the Ethics Committee”. “We may not always be able to provide a solution but a healthy discussion with a group of people with experience may open up some avenues that lead to better solutions. Our focus is always on the best patient care and looking at any situation with an 360 degree viewpoint,” said Yearwood. The Ethics Committee also approves research projects, which are submitted to the Committee for approval and are thoroughly scrutinized for any possible ethical implications. The Ethics committee meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. in the Hibiscus Conference Room at the HSA. Anyone can bring an issue to the committee by contacting 244-2814.
