HIV Testing Day serves as a vital reminder that testing is the gateway to prevention, treatment, and care. This year’s theme, “Know Your Status. Protect Your Health,” highlights the importance of early detection and ongoing awareness in the fight against HIV.

Dr. Eryka Simmons - Acting Director of Primary Healthcare Services
“Early diagnosis is critical to improving health outcomes and preventing the spread of HIV,” said Dr. Eryka Simmons, Acting Director of Primary Healthcare Services. “We encourage every resident to make HIV testing a regular part of their healthcare routine. When people know their status, they are better equipped to protect their health and the health of others.” Routine testing not only promotes individual well-being but also contributes to the broader public health goal of reducing HIV transmission and eliminating stigma.
“HIV is no longer a death sentence. With early diagnosis and access to treatment, people living with HIV can lead long, healthy lives,” said Nurse Mitchell Campbell, HIV Coordinator. “We want the community to feel empowered — not afraid — to get tested. Knowing your status opens the door to knowledge, care, and control.”
In support of global efforts to end the AIDS epidemic, the Public Health Department remains committed to community outreach, risk reduction, and ensuring stigma-free access to testing and care. These efforts align with the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets—a global health strategy set for 2025 that aims to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030. The targets call for:
1. 95% of people living with HIV to know their HIV status;
2. 95% of those diagnosed to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy (ART); and
3. 95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression.
The Public Health Department urges all individuals, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation, to take the first step: get tested and stay informed.
