Surface sampling confirmed no hazardous contamination was present, and the overall risk to staff and patients was determined to be extremely low.

In line with its commitment to the health and safety of both patients and staff, the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) has relocated hazardous drug compounding to the Chemotherapy Unit’s designated cleanroom area to prevent future risk. As a precautionary measure, the Authority has conducted a thorough deep cleaning of the pharmacy space, guided by experts in occupational health, environmental safety, and infection control. Compliance with safety protocols has been enforced, and routine checks of the environment and equipment continue to be carried out.

“We want to reassure the public that there was no risk of exposure to patients or visitors during this period, including those in the pharmacy waiting area,” said HSA’s CEO Lizzette Yearwood. “The safety of our patients and staff is always our highest priority, and we are confident that all necessary steps have been taken to restore the pharmacy environment safely.”

With the hospital pharmacy’s reopening, operating hours will now be Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 9:00 pm and Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Smith Road Medical Centre Pharmacy will return to its regular hours Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, and on Saturday, Sunday, and Public Holidays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The HSA extends its appreciation to the public for their understanding and patience during the pharmacy’s temporary closure. Patients may continue to access services at the main pharmacy - Smith Road Medical Centre Pharmacy - and District Health Centres as needed.
