Maternity
We offer an array of maternity services that will make your birthing experience a unique and enjoyable memory. Our aim is to offer the highest standard of maternity care to all mothers and babies in the Cayman Islands, by providing high quality antenatal, intranatal and postnatal services in a pleasant and safe environment. Prenatal Counselling Prenatal counselling is available when planning your pregnancy, whether you are a high or low risk patient. We can help you optimize your pregnancy. Antenatal Care Antenatal clinics are available through the Women's Health Services. These clinics consist of combined care between the Obstetrician and Midwives. Patients are encouraged to start attending clinics from twelve (12) weeks of pregnancy. All normal deliveries will be done by a midwife. An Obstetrician is on call at all times. Classes For Expectant Parents Classes are on held Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m in the Hibiscus conference room by the Pink Ladies Coffee Shop - access via Pines Drive entrance or Anthony Drive entrance to the back of the hospital. Sessions run for 8 weeks and a variety of topics are presented to help the expectant parents prepare for the arrival of their baby. There is no charge to the clients. No pre-registration is necessary - just turn up at the first session of a series of classes! All pregnant mothers are welcome. Partners or other support persons are encouraged to attend. Schedules are available at the antenatal clinics, district clinics, and private doctor clinics.
Maternity Care We emphasise the team approach to maternity care with the midwife having the central role in normal birth. The Doctor is available 24hrs per day. Expert Staff Our staff consists of a well-qualified and experienced team of midwives, obstetricians, paediatricians, anesthetists, neonatal nurses, nursing assistants and ancillary support staff. Other specialists are also available for consultation when needed. "A Word About Your Midwife" Your midwife offers professional care ranging from antenatal preparation and advice to the safe delivery of your baby and then the follow-up care after birth. Their extensive knowledge and experience of the birthing process also enables your midwife to deal with high-risk cases and emergency situations. Private obstetricians and paediatricians also use our facilities to care for their clients. Maternity Unit
The Maternity Unit offers facilities for both low risk and high-risk mothers and babies. These services are comprised of antepartum care (before birth), labour and delivery, post-partum (after-birth) and neonatal care; including normal births, twin births, breech, vacuum, forceps and caesarean section deliveries. The maternity unit, located on the ground floor of the main hospital building in the Health Service Complex has thirteen (13) beds for mothers and their new-born babies, one isolation room for a mother and baby, and three labour, delivery and recovery rooms. All rooms have ensuite bathroom facilities. Our modern labour/delivery rooms enable you to labour and deliver in comfortable surroundings, and are well-equipped to handle any complication which may arise. Mothers in labour are encouraged to have their partner or birth-coach with them during labour and delivery. A Nurse call system connects all rooms on the unit so that help is never far away. Pain Management Pain management techniques as discussed in Parent Craft classes include epidurals and TENS. Pamphlets are available in the Antenatal Clinics and Parent Craft classes. You are encouraged to discuss your pain management plan with your Obstetrician/Midwife. Breast Feeding
An important aspect of our work is to promote and support breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding (no other foods), as recommended by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) is encouraged from birth to a mimimum of 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age and beyond, while receiving appropriate and adequate complementary foods. Our 'rooming in' practice is conducive to breastfeeding. Our Maternity Staff will assist you in breastfeeding your baby. On discharge the Breastfeeding Support Group and the Community Midwives will continue to give support for breastfeeding. If you do not plan to breastfeed, you will be advised and assisted with alternative methods of feeding. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is well equipped to care for up to 6 newborns who may be premature or may need special observation or intensive care. There is also a Nursery for assessment of well babies and special teaching sessions for parents. Healthy newborns usually stay with their mothers in their rooms. Visiting Hours Regular visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with 2 visitors per patient at one time. Fathers are encouraged to take part in the care of the new baby. These times can be arranged in consultation with the midwife on duty. For the protection of our newborns, brothers and sisters of the new baby are the only children under 12 allowed to visit the ward. However, they must be free of colds, fevers or other infections. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit allows free visiting for parents of an ill baby. Visits by grand-parents are also allowed and arranged with the nurse on duty. Length Of Stay The expected length of stay after a normal birth is 3 days. This maybe longer if there are any complications. Earlier discharges can be arranged at the discretion of the attending obstetrician and paediatrician. What To Take To The Hospital A list of items to bring to the Hospital will be provided to you in our Antenatal clinic and Parentcraft classes.
