Ambulatory Care / Oncology

The Ambulatory Care Unit is a 7-bed unit fully equipped to handle all patient surgeries. The present trend in patient care is out-patient post operative treatment. At least 50%of all surgical procedures performed at the Health Services Authority are day cases. There is a full complement of staff to allow for pre-operational preparation, surgical treatment and post operative care and discharge all in the same day. The Oncology Unit is staffed by trained nurses and an Oncology Physician with on-going outpatient clinics and chemotherapy treatments.


Critical Care Unit

The eight-bed Critical Care Unit is designed to meet the needs of seriously ill cardiac, respiratory, surgical, renal or trauma patients. The critical care staff are highly skilled internationally trained specialist nurses. All Nurses are ACLS trained. The unit features the latest in bedside monitoring systems and other specialized equipment. Computerized services enhance the current high standards of critical care. Information about the patient's progress is collected at the bedside to assist staff in reviewing patient status and making treatment decisions. Medical Unit

This unit has twenty-four beds for patients with a variety of general medical conditions. Visiting hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Only two visitors per patient at a time please. No children under twelve years of age are allowed except under special circumstances and they must be escorted and supervised by an adult.


Mental Health

The mental health department provides services to children, adolescents, adults and elderly persons. Services include 24-hour emergency care and crisis intervention, in-patient and out-patient care, consultation and liaison services, forensic services, community outreach, public education and research. Within the eight-bed in-patient, psychiatric nurses and an occupational therapist provide specialised medical treatment for acutely disturbed patients. The day care facility provides a supportive learning environment, clinical assistance and social support for patients having on-going difficulties with community adjustment and interpersonal relations. The day care programme offers continuing treatment from Monday to Friday, while maintaining the patient in the community.


Neonatal Intensive Care

This unit is located on the Maternity Unit and staffed by Neonatal Nurses. This unit provides specialised facilities and services for premature and other high-risk infants and can accommodate up to six infants at a time. A well-baby nursery, equipped for four to six babies provides accommodation for babies who cannot room with their mothers. A feature of this unit is the glass partition through which family members can view the newborns so as to reduce the risk of transmission of infections.


Nutrition Services

Highly experienced and dedicated registered dietitians provide up to date evidence based dietary counseling and medical nutrition therapy. Nutrition services include individualized detailed assessments and diet plans which range from weight management for adults and children to health eating with diabetes, high cholesterol and much more. Nutrition services are available on all inpatient units, ACU, oncology, women's health, mental health unit, dialysis unit, cardiac rehab and all district clinics.


Operating Theatre

The Cayman Islands Hospital has four surgical suites, three of which are used for major surgeries, while the fourth is available for all minor outpatient procedures. Operations in several disciplines are performed in our Operating Theatres including: ear, nose and throat, plastic surgery, orthopaedic, eye, vascular, urology, all types of general surgery, laparoscopic surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology.

Paediatrics

The paediatric in-patient and out-patient facilities have been specially developed to cater to the specific needs of sick children. The children no longer have to sit in the same waiting area as adults when they are brought to see the paediatrician. Instead, they and their guardians have their own waiting room and bathroom facilities, designed and equipped especially for them. The thirteen (13) bed paediatric unit includes a two bedded high-dependency area and three isolation rooms specially designed for the delivery of optimum care for children, while making their hospital stay as pleasant an experience as possible. Surgical Unit

This unit has twenty beds for recovering surgical patients. Visiting hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visiting is restricted to two persons at a time and visits should be brief for new post operative patients or the very ill.
